Who are modern Jews and what do they believe?

l    Who? – about 13-14 million worldwide; 5 mil USA, 5 mil Israel

l    Who? – 2 main ethnic groups (Ashkenazic, Sephardic)

l    4 Main religious groups (Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstruction)

l    Differences – Attitude towards Halakhah, synagogue services, Torah composition, etc.

Beliefs

l    No firm collection of dogma, no Magisterium

l    Thirteen principles of faith

l    Halakhah – 613 Mitzvot

l    Written and Oral Law

         -written- Protestant O.T. w/ emphasis on Torah

         - oral – Mishnah and Gemara = Talmud

 

13 Principles of Faith (Maimonides)

l      God Exists

l      God is One and Unique

l      God is Incorporeal

l      God is Eternal

l      Prayer to God alone

l      Words of the Prophet are True

l      Moses is greatest prophet

l      The Messiah will come

l      Moses received the written Torah and Oral Torah

l      There will be no other Torah

l      God knows thoughts and deeds of men

l      God will reward the good and punish the wicked

l      The dead will be resurrected

The Coming of the Messiah

l     Ordain himself king

l     Achieve independence for the Jewish people in their own land-Israel

l     An ideal king

l     Dead will be resurrected

l     Peace, Justice brotherhood will be for the whole world

l     Original plan 6000 yrs,

l     Start to Abraham – 2000 yrs, Abraham to Messiah –2000 yrs, Messiah to end – 2000 yrs

l     3 messiahs

l     1000 yrs of desolation after messianic age

Properties of the Soul

l    Comes from God/precedes the body

l    Soul not indivisible/made from 5 elements

l    Afterlife in bible, but little doctrine

l    First Sheol, then Gan Eden (Heaven)

l    No righteous go to Gehinnom

l    No souls damned forever

Summary

l     No two paths to Salvation, the Church is the all-embracing means of salvation

l     O.T. has intrinsic value outside of typology

l     Today’s Jews not responsible for decisions of Jewish leaders then, nor disbelief of other Jews

l     Value in studying Modern Judaism

l     Importance of precise, accurate teaching to avoid anti-Semitism

l     Singularity of O.T. people is not exclusive, uniqueness of the Jewish people is meant to be a force of example
