At Least Robots Don’t Take Communion

By Douglas E. Sparkes

The following quote was recently read on the Dave Ross web page.  Dave Ross is running for office, but as an active Catholic he is weak when it comes to abortion.  I wrote this letter to Dave in July of 2004, but I have not received a response:

Ross said that while he considered himself "pro-choice," he didn't feel compelled to agree entirely with the agendas of interest groups.

"I rarely line up 100 percent behind any one group because I'm not a robot," he said.

Dave,

I’m not writing to complain…I’m writing from grief…I am writing from anger. I want to vote for you. I want to be a democrat, but you guys are so lost you don’t see that you’ve become arrogant anti-Christians!

Of course, I am talking about abortion.

The difference between conception and you, Dave Ross -  right now today is the time it takes to go from conception and lap the sun 52 times.  That’s it. A conceived child will not turn into a fish or a frog. A conceived child is a person. A member of society…providing the conceived child is given time and the developmental protection he or she needs.

Abortion violates the Constitution of the United States because no government can give us the rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.  These rights, as our constitution so rightly points out, are inalienable…meaning they are God-given, and not man given or man made.

First and foremost of these rights is the right to life.  The other two are a distant second or third because you can not have liberty and you can not have happiness if you don’t first have life!

Therefore, when a woman cries, “My right to choose” she is denying the rights of life to others. She is placing her personal rights of liberty and happiness above the life of others and not only is this wrong, it is unconstitutional.

I recently saw a bumper sticker that read, “Keep your laws off my body.” I believe that should be the just cry of every unborn child and it’s up to leaders such as yourself to enforce it…even if it goes against your party or costs you an election…or is it better to have the whole world but lose your soul in the process?

It’s not a matter of Pro-Choice, it’s a matter of Pro-Responsibility.  If I drink to excess and injure someone while driving intoxicated I am rightfully punished because I have behaved irresponsibly.  So why am I not held accountable for my actions when I engage in sexual actions that results in an unwanted pregnancy?

Dave, I am going to throw your own words back into your face, because you are not a robot…and since you rarely go with any one group 100% I pray that you are not double speaking and that you will find the courage not to align with the Democrats on this issue.

Many, many, Catholics and other Pro-Life advocates will vote for you as the stand out Democrat if you would change your mind and your position on abortion.  It’s a big deal, Dave. It’s costing you votes. It’s dividing this country and it’s an abomination before the Lord.

You must do the right thing or I will not vote for you. I will fight against you.  In point of fact, you should not be receiving communion at this time as it brings much scandal on the Church.

Dave, do not let your conscience be your guide as your conscience must first be properly formed.  The infallible Catholic Church is right on this matter even if you don’t agree.  Do not ignore her.

Be a real man, Dave!  I want to believe in you, but you must do the right thing first and on this point there can be no gray-matter.

May the Passion of Jesus Christ wash over you and fill you with the Holy Spirit,
